Châteaux Beaumont

Leaving Fraser was mildly stressful. Not because we’d have to reintegrate with society or retrain our bathroom techniques. It was stressful for the recent memory of being bogged in soft, deep sand on our way over to Fraser.

The sandy entry point to the barge that departs from Inskip has claimed a few victims over the years. Without boring you with the details, I’ll simply leave you the photo and let you ponder our recovery. Making matters worse, our low ride run up the beach was delayed making for a anxious few hours driving along Fraser as the tide closed in..

With some skill and a greater degree of luck we actually made it onto bitumen without a hitch (pardon the pun!) and headed straight for the car-spa to wash the sand and salt from our lives, pump the tires up and de-sand as much as possible.

We then headed to the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast to stay with my old mate Nicky B and his wife Ado at their beautiful property.

It was awesome waking up under a solid structure a few short metres to the bathroom not needing to deploy the squat or March fly dance (its Midnight Oil esque in case you were wondering)

We were spoilt with a wonderful food, great company and a few solid nights rest, not to mention the opportunity to once again wash our clothes.





Serious storms rolled through south east Queensland while stayed and we were forced to bunker down with beer and the Ashes.

Hastings Point.

From the Beaumonts we headed south and drove through one of the worse storms I have encountered on the road. Fortunately we made it safely to our next destination in Hastings Point. Our first Big4 Park, complete with waterpark and kids club (the sort where you drop them off for a few hours each day :)). 

Just south of the Qld border, the area is really beautiful with spectacular beaches and estuaries.

We did it - we left! Goodbye Sydney, adios Bondi, au revoir weekend traffic, see ya check out queues, $14 lunches, $10 beers, weekend parking and double shot long skinny macchiato’s. Yamba

Yamba Cheers for the support following our opening post guys.. We made a spontaneous decision to pack up and head for Yamba on Sunday. Turned out to be a wise one judging by the storms we drove through on the way. Day turned to night at 4pm as we headed into some sickening storm clouds. News that evening spoke of multiple road fatalities across the state, snow in the alpines and widespread hail, so a few nights under a solid structure was on the cards. Somewhat ironic after just 5 nights camping and a few high fives along the way toasting our newly acquired camping legs. Anyway, 2 nights in a 5 star resort in Angourie was bliss. AC, TV, washing machine, toilet, shower, pool, restaurant, games room (complete with jumping castle and sit down space invaders). Lets just say there are worse places to ride out a storm. Fraser Island

Glassy waters of Lake Mackenzie A Panorama from our camp Not much prepares you for the sand of Fraser. Its overwhelming. Oh, it’s the biggest sand island in the world you say. Doesn’t help and wont give you the mental fortitude to endure the relentless grains of glass. Inside, underneath and on top of everything you own for the duration of your visit. And for sometime afterwards also. Perhaps that’s why some opt for the resorts that exist on the west side of the island (only for the elderly and soft of course  J ). The weather has been pretty sketchy and we experienced our first night of extreme camping, facing into a few hours of serious terential rain buffeted by gale force winds.
